I love a good smoothie, especially one that’s a meal in a glass. I tend to drink them more regularly as a breakfast during the summer months. Something about a cold smoothie on a hot summer day helps to put some pep in my step. Being mostly plant-based in diet, I like the idea of protein shakes, but you don’t necessarily need to use a protein powder — although, there are some really tasty organic and non-gmo options these days (I’ll link two of my fav below). I haven’t been using powders recently and added a few things to a classic smoothie to bump up the protein and also started adding a little something for antioxidants.
What is an antioxidant? Antioxidants are compounds that help clear the body of free radicals. Free radicals are chemically reactive molecules that cause harm to an organism’s cells.
Ingredients I use and why…
Nut Milk – high in protein and high in fiber. Lately, I’ve been using Milkadamia’s unsweetened macadamia milk. It has an amazing flavor and adds to the creaminess of the smoothie.
No Salt, No Sugar Nut Butter – I love peanut butter, but if you want an option with lower cholesterol and great flavor, natural almond butter is AMAZING! It also adds a nice texture to your drink.
Frozen Banana – Bananas are high potassium (which can help lower blood pressure), B6, and vitamin C. A frozen banana helps you cut down on the amount of ice you need to keep it chilled
Unsweetened Cacao – Cacao is raw chocolate powder that is rich in antioxidants, fiber, protein, and magnesium. Plus, it’s a natural mood booster.
Chaga Powder – Chaga is a type of mushroom that is also high in antioxidants. It’s believed to help the body fight certain illnesses, manage blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and fight inflammation.
5 simple ingredients are really a powerhouse of healthy vitamins and minerals. Plus, it’s a classic flavor combo that you never really get sick of.

Nikki’s Classic Smoothie Recipe
1/2 Frozen Banana
1/2 Cup Nut Milk
1/4 Cup Water
2 TBSP Nut Butter
2 TBSP Cacao
1 TBSP Chaga
2 Ice Cubes
(If you want to sweeten it up, add 1 TBSP agave nectar.)
Feel like you still want more protein? My two favorite protein’s are Ora Organic and Arbonne. Chocolate will always be my favorite, but they come in vanilla, chai, and some limited edition flavors as well.
