1 in 4 women is a victim of sexual assault. 1 in 6 women is a victim of attempted/completed rape. This is not ok. I am a victim. It’s not something I talk about or carry with me, but with all of the recent rape culture discussion hitting the internet lately, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts.
I wasn’t asking for it, nor do I think any woman is every ASKING for it. I was among friends… or so I thought. A fun night of drinking with friends ended with me waking up with a guy on top of me. It took days for it to actually sink in and when I wanted to say something, I was basically intimidated out of it by his friends. It’s been 11 years. I have healed, forgiven and moved on, but it’s not that easy for everyone.
Let’s get back to this “asking for it” bit… I don’t care if a woman wants to walk around naked, it doesn’t mean anyone has the right to assault her or rape her. Men need to control their fucking hormones and learn to respect women as their equal. We are not inferior beings put on this planet to be sexual objects.
Rape is not ok and we, as a society, need to stop pretending like it is acceptable. Sexually assaulting someone, whether physically or verbally is not ok either! All are emotional and physical violations.
Your body, your rules. Let’s stop being so scared to speak up for ourselves ladies.

This topic makes my blood boil.
I just don’t understand and can not wrap my brain around rape culture.
I.just.can’t.
I am so sorry that you experienced what you did and it was NOT ok. I am hoping that your experiences will educate and help other women who find themselves down this path.
Thank you for speaking out. I am one of the 1-in-6 and I admire you for being able to put it in your past. I am pretty sure that’s where mine is, but I still have significant anxiety (agoraphobia). I cannot say for sure the two are linked, but I’ve gotten where I don’t even tell doctors I’m a statistic because they always want to latch on to that as the cause.
Preach! Rape culture is so ridiculous and with a potential president making light of such a situation I am so overwhelmed with frustration. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for advocating. Thank you.
THANK YOU! I am so sick of people acting as if this isn’t still a HUGE issue!
This is definitely an issue that needs to be spoken about and I couldn’t agree more. It’s definitely not ok and we all need to stop pretending it is. Thanks for sharing your story.
