It’s holiday time and all the hustle and bustle has begun. Regardless of how you celebrate this time of year –the energy level of those around us has revved up. You know what I mean…people speeding up to get one car ahead of you. The lady in line behind you at the checkout who is huffing and snorting because she has to wait. Hostile shoppers racing to get that special limited edition item on sale. Seriously, people totally lose themselves and often the intent of the season: love, gratitude and sharing aka giving! All this chaos creates an imbalance in the energy field around us. If we don’t do our own inner balance work the bad energy of others can throw us off track.
When I work with my clients these are the 3 basic self-help tools I teach them for calming mind and body. These are super easy to learn and it is a powerful combination. And absolutely anyone can do these – great for children and adults. They require no special equipment. These techniques can be done almost anywhere. And you can use these individually or in any combination you like best and they still work. And, there’s more…use these techniques on ANY issue that is getting in your way mentally and emotionally.
#1 Aromatherapy. Essential Oils have been used therapeutically for thousands of years for emotional and physical well-being. They are distilled from flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and the seeds of plants, and are rich in antioxidants, nutrients and compounds beneficial to health and vitality and are produced in liquid form. The distillation process is what makes essential oils so concentrated – it takes, for example, thousands of flower petals to create the drops that are in a single bottle of rose oil, and adding just one drop of peppermint oil to a glass of water has approximately the same concentration as 20 bags of tea.
When we breathe in the aroma of essential oils, almost instantly our brain receives a message from the aromatic molecules to the limbic system – this is the system in the brain that regulates emotions. So when we want to change an emotional pattern in our minds, essential oils can help start a new, positive cycle in the emotional center of our brains. To create a calm and relaxing feeling lavender is often the go to essential oil.

#2 Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Breathing. There are several types of breathwork you can do depending on what your body needs such as relaxation, sleep, inner balance and energy. The primary type of breathing I teach is Coherence breathing. This is heart-centered and brings your heart, mind and emotions in sync with each other resulting in better energy flow and balancing thoughts and emotions, and feeling better fast. It is really excellent to use for releasing stress and draining emotions such as frustration, anger and anxiety. For many of us, these emotions tend to creep in around the holidays at some point. This was created by Heartmath – only 2 steps to feeling less stressed.
Step 1: Heart-Centered Breathing. Start by holding your hands over your heart. Take a few moments to focus your attention on your heart. Feel your chest rising as you breath and heart beating. Imagine your breath flowing in and out of your heart. Now breath a little slower and deeper than usual.
Step 2: Focus your thoughts on a positive and pleasant experience that generates feelings of joy, gratitude or appreciation. This can be a person, pet and event. The feelings that are created is what matters.
Do this 3-5 minutes one or two times a day for stress prevention. And repeat as needed in a stressful situation.
#3 Meridian Energy Tapping, AKA Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT Tapping is one of the hottest modalities used today by a variety of therapists and healthcare practitioners. It’s used for stress relief among their patients, as well as managing emotional, mental and physical conditions. It is a fusion of Ancient Eastern and Modern Western medicine. It blends the philosophies of Chinese Acupressure with Psychology. So, basically, it is a combination of talk therapy and acupuncture without needles. According to Chinese medicine, all negative emotions create an energy disruption. Tapping can help to re-pattern the neural pathways and clear negative energetic body memory that holds the old hurt and recurring negative and often self-sabotaging cycles.
These are the things that can be holding us back from success, causing dysfunction in our work and personal relationships and can even be the source of physical illness. These things often operate at a subconscious level – we cannot possibly be aware of them in order to fix them in a logical way.
So by now you are probably asking, how do you do it, right? Using the tips of two or three fingers you will tap about 7 times on 9 locations on the upper body which represent endpoints along the energy meridians that run throughout the body while saying specific statements. By using the tips of your fingers to tap on these meridian points you are stimulating your body’s energy and healing potential.
You can get a step-by-step Tapping guide, along a more detailed explanation and a diagram of the points here: Text: TAPPING to 44222 and reply with your email and shazam! It will be in your email – be sure to check your spam folder!
Two things occur from Tapping on these points while making specific statements:
1. You are sending calming signals to the area of the brain that controls your emotions, short-term memory, motivation and learning – the limbic system.
2. You are cleaning out congestion which is actually blocked negative energy and emotional conflict which can produce symptoms.
Try these 3 tools just once or twice day for a week and see if you experience:
- More clarity of thought.
- Become less reactive to your typical stress triggers.
- Find yourself more focused and results oriented.
- See the possibilities in situations instead of the negative.
- Less overwhelm from all of life’s craziness.
