Icons in Your Life
I know many people who have religious alters in the their homes. I like to have Jesus around looking down on me, especially when I think one of the girls on the third floor of my complex is possessed, but thatâ€™s a story for another day. What is it about having icons around that make us feel good? Religiously, it fills us with a sense of security when we feel that the spirit is with us, in our homes, keeping us safe, but what about other icons and altars? Ones that are solely based on good vibes, mojo, juju or whatever you want to call it. How can we surround ourselves with icons that we connect with on a higher level?
Self-Reflection Change is always hard, but if you donâ€™t understand why you do certain things, change will become even harder. Self-reflection can be a tedious process if youâ€™re not used to tapping into your own mind, but itâ€™s an important process to go through if you want to move forward in life. Have you ever failed to do something multiple times? Maybe youâ€™ve tried to diet and just canâ€™t seem to stick with it. There may be things in your past, locked inside your self-conscious, keeping you from achieving what youâ€™d hope to. Self-reflection is also great way to learn how better ways of coping and most importantly, loving yourself through all of your trials and tribulations.
Putting the Soul in Your Workout
It was towards the end of my time in L.A. that I had gotten lost in the Hollywood bullshit. I was caught up in a superficial lifestyle and desperately trying to break free, but change is difficult, especially when you live a comfortable life. I was a producer working on movie trailers and TV campaigns for many different studios, but it was running my life and slowly started to kill my soul. For someone whose outlet was working out and prided themselves on eating well balance meals, the hours I was working and the stress level slowly took that away from me. People in the entertainment industry LOVE to drink for any reason they can think of and when you work 12-14 hour days, ordering into the office is normal. I could sit here and blame the industry or I can blame myself for letting it change me… for letting me undo all of the hard work I had achieved for my body. Part of the blame, is my own.
Color Me Happy
If youâ€™ve ever taken a basic psychology class, one of the chapters always covers colors and how the mind perceives them. I remember sitting in this class in college and discussing why we connect with some colors, what feelings certain colors evoke, and why some people have an opposite reaction to them. I, myself, was completely adverse to warm colors. Yellow, Orange, and Red? Please get me out of this room! They made me anxious and uncomfortable. But when you think about those colors, they are normally associated with sunshine, happiness, love… It was good to learn though, that I wasnâ€™t the only person who had the opposite reaction to these colors.
Picking Your Posse
I never really ran with a bad crowd, most of them were artsy people, but man did I have a lot of bitches in my life. Sorry, but this is not the time to censor myself. I seriously hung out with some of the most hateful, backstabby people on the planet. Itâ€™s no wonder that there were parts of my life that were less than stellar. That negative energy loomed over me whether I wanted it to or not. As hard as it is, sometimes you have to choose whom you keep in your life and whom you set free. In life, it is imperative to surround yourself with good people, because you essentially pick up traits and become like the people you associate with. People who are on your track will keep you on your track, but if you try to cohabitate with people in a different lane, more often than not, youâ€™ll end up in their lane.
Pick Up Some Weights
Seriously ladies… learn to love lifting. Your bodyÂ doesnâ€™t produce testosterone soÂ you wonâ€™t bulk. Weights are whatâ€™s going to give you that tight, muscle tone thatÂ you donâ€™t achieve from cardio. You donâ€™t have to go crazy and start takingÂ supplements. A balanced diet with enough protein in each meal will allow you toÂ build muscle. If you donâ€™t have a gym membership,Â you can buy a few different sizedÂ weights and do lifting at home. A rep should feelÂ like work, but you should neverÂ strain. Use a weight that youâ€™re comfortable withÂ and when it starts to feel easy, upÂ the weight by 5-10lbs.
Ground Yourself in Nature
Personally, the best therapy for me has been nature. Iâ€™ve done the whole â€œcouch timeâ€ thing and while it helped me through a really dark time, now there is nothing that helps me ground myself more than stepping outside. Hiking not only helped me lose the majority of my weight, it allowed me to distress, think, and ground myself. Using nature as a grounding element is a form of meditation. You donâ€™t have to be still but itâ€™s best to be quiet. Listen to what is happening around you and listen to what is happening in your head and in your heart. LISTEN. That is what itâ€™s all about. The vibrations of the universe will ease your soul. If you have anxiety, instead of curling in a ball, take your shoes off and go stand in the grass. If you live by water, put your bare feet in earthâ€™s natural water. Your life, like the ocean, has high tides and low tides. Nature has such amazing healing properties if you open yourself up to them.
The Scale is a Liar!
Iâ€™ve been obsessed with that number… that little bastard staring up at you making you think that youâ€™re fat. Let me explain to you why that scale is a dirty liar. 4 years ago, at my lightest, I was 108lbs, but I was what you would call â€œskinny fatâ€. I was thin, had no muscle, and yet still looked a little bloated. I started doing Beachbodyâ€™s Insanity about a year later and gained 6lbs. The scale is sitting their telling me â€œOMG YOU GAINED 6LBS!!!â€–but my mirror was telling me I was leaner and more muscular than I had been at 108lbs. The scale doesnâ€™t tell you the whole story. My suggestion? Get a tape measure and a camera. Pictures are worth a thousand words… Inches lost are more important than Lbs lost. No more torturing yourself with the scale.
Little Changes Yield BIG Results
When I first moved to Hollywood, CA and was finally ready and focused on my weightloss, I didnâ€™t know where to start. I was very out of shape. Running was out of the question, I got winded going up and down stairs, and I had a hard time doing bodyweight exercises. So what to do when you feel like the cards are stacked against you? Walk! Get your body used to movement.
I believe in many things. I believe in God, nature, the universe, and energy forces… I believe that nothing is random and that everything and everyone is connected. You donâ€™t have to be religious to believe in something greater than you and me. Having a belief and a higher understanding of the world around me has helped me live life more fully. Feel a connection between you and the world around you. Believe in good karma and positive energy and your life will be more balanced and abundant. The Secret tells us, â€œIf you knew how powerful your mind was, youâ€™d never think another negative thought.â€ Open yourself up to the possibilities the world has to offer. Believe in something greater.
Believe in Yourself
No one gets in your way more than you do. Self-doubt is the killer of dreams, goals and motivation. I picked the photo for this blog with one thing in mind… how doubting myself while climbing that almost ruined a race for me. Iâ€™m terrified of heights, which makes obstacle course racing that much more interesting.
